Chow
Chow Puppies - colours and correct pigmentation at about 8 weeks:
Black
chow chow puppy coats are a faded colour & soft to the touch. Grey
hair may or may not be present in the tail and thighs. The tongue and
gums should be bluish black, the lips and nose black and eyes dark brown.
Blue
chow chow puppy coats are a light silvery grey color and soft to the
touch. Grey hair may or may not be present in the tail and thighs. The
tongue and gums will be bluish, lips and nose blue and eyes a greyish
colour. The eyes turn brown between 3-5months.
Cream
chow chow puppy coats are a light cream colour with biscuit ears. The
coat is soft to the touch. Gums will be pink. Tongue will be bluish
to blue-black. Lips will be black. Nose will be black with a pinkish
hue in some. Eyes will be dark brown. In the dilute cream, the ears
will be fawn, the nose will be bluish with a pinkish hue to it. The
lips will be dark grey and the eyes a greygreen colour, turning brown
between 3-5months of age.
Fawn
- also called cinnamon chow chow puppy coats vary from a sandy grey
to a light brown with a grey hue in the coat. The muzzle is often grey
and the tip of the tail dark grey. The lips are very dark slate/grey.
The tongue and gums will be bluish and the nose dark slate/grey.
Eyes are a greyish colour and turn brown between 3-5months of age.
Red
chow chow puppy coats are a faded warm brown colour. Often the ears
are a blackish colour, and there is black hair in the tail, notably
the tip of the tail. The muzzle is sometimes blackish as well. Tongue
will be blue-black and gums will vary from pink with black appearing
around the root of the teeth to entirely bluish. Lips will be black
and roof of the mouth is bluish. Eyes will be dark brown. Nose will
be black. The gums turn dark blue-black between 3-5months of age.
In
some bloodlines (an inherited gene) the tongue turns blue-black in a
spotted manner instead of just shading over (any of the colours, black
included). These puppies sometimes still have pink spots on the tongue
at 8 weeks. The total colouring of the tongue may only complete at about
5 months of age. As it is unknown whether the tongue will completely
colour over, it must be assumed that it may not change colour perfectly.
In the case of KUSA registered breeders, they generally choose to exclude
puppies without complete colouring from their breeding program, however,
it does not make the chow chow puppy not purebred, it is just a faulty
genetic expression.
